4 Ways to Overcome and Symptoms of Dehydration in Children
Not only occurs in adults, dehydration can also be experienced by children. However, dehydration in children is often not realized. Mothers must know the symptoms of dehydration in children so they can prevent more severe conditions.
Children are more prone to dehydration than adults. In children, playing in hot weather, traveling far away, excessive urination, fever, vomiting and diarrhea can easily cause children to become dehydrated.
Symptoms of Dehydration in Children
Here are some symptoms of dehydration in children that parents should recognize:
The child’s mouth looks dry and chapped lips.
Frequency of urination (BAK) becomes rare, even BAK does not last more than 6-8 hours.
Children become sleepy often and look more limp.
The children’s eyes look more sunken.
Child’s skin becomes drier and rather cold.
The child looks inactive.
The breathing frequency of children becomes faster and deeper.
This condition must be treated immediately, because if it continues, it can be life-threatening.
How to Overcome Dehydration in Children
When experiencing mild dehydration, parents can take the following initial treatments:
1. Provide adequate fluid intake
If the child has symptoms of dehydration, immediately provide adequate fluid intake. Mother can give him water, ORS solution, or other liquid. Provision of this fluid is useful to replace fluids and salts (electrolytes) lost from the body.
2. Give fruits that contain lots of water
Mother can provide fruits that are rich in water content. This method is able to overcome mild dehydration in children. Some fruits that contain lots of water are watermelons, melons, oranges, cucumbers, and strawberries.
3. Make sure the child has enough rest
After getting enough fluid intake, make sure the child has enough rest. This aims to speed up the recovery process.
4. Avoid giving children caffeinated drinks
When a child is dehydrated, avoid giving him caffeinated drinks. Giving caffeinated drinks to children who are dehydrated can worsen this condition. Some drinks that contain caffeine levels are tea, soft drinks, and chocolate.
The mother can do some independent treatment above when the child has symptoms of dehydration. However, if the symptoms of dehydration in children get worse, see a doctor immediately to get the right treatment.
