6 Myths About Insomnia

If you always have trouble falling asleep or can’t go back to sleep after waking up even for a moment, then you probably have Insomnia.

Myth 1: Watching TV can help the sleep process.

Increased levels of the hormone melatonin in the brain near bedtime can make it easier for you to fall asleep. However, sound and light from a TV or computer screen can actually reduce melatonin levels.

Instead, you can listen to some slow music that can help you relax and sleep.

Myth 2: Your body will get used to getting less sleep.

This myth is very dangerous because constantly experiencing a lack of sleep can make the body tired and experience minor to serious problems such as the risk of an accident while driving, decreased performance at work, to serious health problems. You can get into the schedule for shorter sleep, but your body still needs enough hours of sleep, which is 7-8 hours for adults.

Myth 3: You can make up for lost hours of sleep.

The only way to “make up” for lost sleep is to reset your activity schedule, especially your daily sleep time. Sleeping only a few hours on weekdays and then replacing it with sleeping all day on weekends will actually mess up your biological clock. In the end, this habit will actually make it more difficult for you to sleep.

Myth 4: It’s okay to take sleeping pills constantly.

Sleeping pills only help you sleep at night when you take them. However, these drugs cannot treat the underlying causes of insomnia. Even in the long term, besides causing addiction, these drugs can have side effects such as: change in appetite, diarrhea, headache, dry mouth or throat, heartburn, abdominal pain, and fatigue. Detecting and treating the root cause of your difficulty sleeping remains the best solution to treat insomnia.

Myth 5: Naps can be an antidote to insomnia.

Naps have different effects on different people. Some people may find that sleeping for about 15 minutes during the day will refresh their body and make it easier for them to sleep at night. However, naps in people with insomnia generally make it even more difficult for them to sleep at night.

Myth 6: Sleep problems are common problems that need not be addressed because they can go away on their own.

Sleep disturbance can refer to serious illness or cause other problems. You should immediately see a doctor to find out the main cause of sleep difficulties.
