6 Ways to Prevent Varicose Veins

6 Ways to Prevent Varicose Veins

Windowofworld.comHow to Prevent Varicose Veins? Varicose veins are a condition of widening and swelling of the veins due to weak venous valves. This condition is often experienced by many people, especially in women, people with obesity, and people who often stand for long periods (usually because of work).

How to prevent varicose veins?

Varicose veins are most common in the legs. The appearance of varicose veins can occur suddenly if you have the risk factors above. Although it is difficult to prevent varicose veins, you can prevent the disease from getting worse. Several ways to prevent varicose veins can be done, including:

1. Avoid standing or sitting for long periods

Do not stand and sit too often for a long time because this is what often causes varicose veins. Try to walk every 30 minutes. When sitting, avoid bending or crossing your legs.

2. Exercise regularly

The muscles in the legs help return venous blood to the heart, which defies the force of gravity. Exercises that involve the leg muscles can also prevent new varicose veins from forming, and help you lose weight if you are overweight or obese.

3. Position the feet higher than the heart

While resting, you can place a pillow under your feet to give them a little lift. The recommended position is to get your feet higher than the heart position. This can increase blood flow from the legs to the heart.

4. Do not wear clothes that are too tight

Avoid wearing clothes that are too tight, especially around the waist, hips, and legs. These tight clothes can make varicose veins worse.

5. Avoid using high heels too often

Women like to use high heels. If you do use them, avoid wearing them for a long time. The lower heel of the shoe can help tone the muscles in the leg, which helps improve venous flow.

6. Using compression stockings

According to experts, using compression stockings can help the movement of blood flow to the heart. These stockings are specially designed to put pressure on the legs to prevent blood from collecting in the lower legs and reduce swelling in the legs.

Apart from being preventative, compression stockings can also help relieve the symptoms of pain, discomfort, and swelling that you experience from varicose veins. There are three types of compression stockings that you can use, namely:

  • Pantyhose. This model of stockings provides the lowest pressure and is widely sold in various clothing stores.
  • Gradient compression stockings. These types of stockings put more pressure on the leg, ankle and lower leg areas. This area is the area that requires the highest pressure to flow blood back to the heart. You can find these stockings at health supply stores and drug stores.
  • High pressure compression stockings. These types of stockings exert the greatest stress on the leg, ankle and lower leg areas. These stockings can only be purchased by prescription. Typically, you will need to take measurements to fit your stockings to the size of your leg. Before you put on compression stockings, make sure you don’t have any other medical conditions, such as heart failure, that can make your condition worse if you wear high-pressure stockings.

Compression stockings can also be used during pregnancy to prevent varicose veins. When pregnant, you are at high risk for varicose veins due to increased pressure from the fetus which can put pressure on the veins in the area around the pelvis. Use of compression stockings should be done throughout the day, from when you wake up in the morning until before bed at night.

In hot weather, wearing stockings can be uncomfortable, but it’s a good idea to stick with them given the benefits of using compression stockings. One of the effects of using stockings is dry skin. If this happens, you can use a moisturizing cream before bed to keep your skin moisturized.

Watch for sores, discoloration, and resilience in your legs. Use of compression stockings can last up to 6 months. After 6 months, you should change to new stockings. This is because repeated use causes the stockings to break and their use is no longer effective. Maintenance of stockings is also needed by washing them using warm water.

Varicose veins treatment

Varicose veins that are classified as mild generally do not require special medical treatment and can be done at home. However, if the varicose veins you are experiencing have caused symptoms or caused complications, then medical attention must be taken immediately.

The method of treatment to be carried out depends on several factors, namely:

  • The patient’s overall health condition
  • Position and size of varicose veins
  • The severity of varicose veins

Varicose veins are treated with the aim of relieving symptoms, reducing their severity and preventing complications. Some of the common methods of treating varicose veins are:

1. Drug administration

The doctor will prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs, such as mefenamic acid or ibuprofen to relieve pain and swelling.

2. Stocking therapy

This therapy uses special compression stockings to treat varicose veins. Compression stockings work by applying pressure to the leg muscles and veins to promote blood flow.

3. Special procedures

There are several types of procedures that can be done to treat varicose veins, namely:

  • Sclerotherapy
  • Laser therapy
  • Endothermic (radiofrequency) ablation therapy
  • Ambulatory phlebectomy
  • Transenduminated power phlebectomy
  • Vein ligation.
  • Endoscopic veins (endoscopic vein surgery)
