4. Do not wear clothes that are too tight

Avoid wearing clothes that are too tight, especially around the waist, hips, and legs. These tight clothes can make varicose veins worse.

5. Avoid using high heels too often

Women like to use high heels. If you do use them, avoid wearing them for a long time. The lower heel of the shoe can help tone the muscles in the leg, which helps improve venous flow.

6. Using compression stockings

According to experts, using compression stockings can help the movement of blood flow to the heart. These stockings are specially designed to put pressure on the legs to prevent blood from collecting in the lower legs and reduce swelling in the legs.

Apart from being preventative, compression stockings can also help relieve the symptoms of pain, discomfort, and swelling that you experience from varicose veins. There are three types of compression stockings that you can use, namely:

  • Pantyhose. This model of stockings provides the lowest pressure and is widely sold in various clothing stores.
  • Gradient compression stockings. These types of stockings put more pressure on the leg, ankle and lower leg areas. This area is the area that requires the highest pressure to flow blood back to the heart. You can find these stockings at health supply stores and drug stores.
  • High pressure compression stockings. These types of stockings exert the greatest stress on the leg, ankle and lower leg areas. These stockings can only be purchased by prescription. Typically, you will need to take measurements to fit your stockings to the size of your leg. Before you put on compression stockings, make sure you don’t have any other medical conditions, such as heart failure, that can make your condition worse if you wear high-pressure stockings.

Compression stockings can also be used during pregnancy to prevent varicose veins. When pregnant, you are at high risk for varicose veins due to increased pressure from the fetus which can put pressure on the veins in the area around the pelvis. Use of compression stockings should be done throughout the day, from when you wake up in the morning until before bed at night.

In hot weather, wearing stockings can be uncomfortable, but it’s a good idea to stick with them given the benefits of using compression stockings. One of the effects of using stockings is dry skin. If this happens, you can use a moisturizing cream before bed to keep your skin moisturized.

Watch for sores, discoloration, and resilience in your legs. Use of compression stockings can last up to 6 months. After 6 months, you should change to new stockings.
