4 Benefits of Black Rice for Health

1. Antioxidant antioxidants

When it’s cooked, the black rice will appear to turn dark purple in color. This is due to the high content of anthocyanin antioxidants in black rice. The antioxidant content is mostly found in the outer skin.

According to an expert, anthocyanin antioxidants may be useful to help fight heart disease, cancer and other health problems. One spoon of black rice has a higher anthocyanin content than one spoon of blueberries, even with less sugar.

2. Vitamin E

The outer skin of black rice is also rich in vitamin E which can boost the immune system and ward off free radicals. Based on several studies, it is known that the content of vitamin E in black rice can help reduce levels of bad cholesterol or LDL and prevent heart disease.

3. Vitamin B

Several types of B vitamins are found in black rice, including vitamins B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), and B9 which are also known as folic acid.

4. Minerals

Minerals that the body needs such as iron, zinc, calcium, manganese and phosphorus are also abundant in black rice.

Tips for Processing Black Rice

After cooking, the black rice will change color, which will turn dark purple with a soft texture. There are many ways to process black rice, as a main food such as rice and porridge, as a material for making bread and noodles, as well as ingredients for making cakes or other sweet foods.

It is not recommended to process black rice using a rice cooker for best results. Here are cooking tips to get the complete benefits of black rice:

First, wash the black rice two to three times with cold water. Then, soak it in water for a few moments. If necessary, soak the black rice in water overnight to prevent the rice from clumping up.

Then, put the black rice in a saucepan or other cooking utensil. Enter the water with a dose of two cups of water (a cup size of about 250 ml), for every one cup of black rice. Apart from water, black rice can also be cooked together with chicken broth, meat broth, or vegetable stock for a more savory taste. The dose is one cup of broth for ½ cup of black rice.

Then, cook the black rice with plain water or broth until it boils. After boiling, reduce heat, cover, and allow for 35 minutes for the water to absorb completely. Then turn off the heat, do not stir and let it sit for about 15 minutes before serving.

Black rice can be used as an alternative to white rice or brown rice. There are many benefits of black rice that can be obtained for health, as well as the taste that is no less delicious.
