Thermal paper is cleaner than your standard ink, produces sharper resolutions, and is ultimately cheaper. The paper is impregnated with a suitable mixture of dyes and matrices; the combination of fluorescent leuco dye and octadecylphosphonic acid is an example. When the matrix is ​​heated above its melting point, the dye reacts with acid, changes to a colored shape, and the modified form is then conserved in a metastable state when the matrix solidifies again quickly enough.

Most printer manufacturers offer ribbon / label combinations that are known to work well together, which is very important because some combinations do not produce images at all. Plastic labels with resin tape will survive outside in full sun, can survive in water and may be resistant to chemicals and oils depending on the type. Often used in the manufacture of Automotive and Airplane components, items that are stored outside and are important for labeling hazardous chemicals that must remain identifiable, for example, after being immersed in seawater for a long time.
