Get to know Gamophobia, Fear of Commitment and Marriage

How to Deal with Gamophobia

Even though gamophobia sufferers are very afraid to commit, that does not mean they are reluctant to have a romantic relationship with someone. Many of them also choose to keep dating their partners without any plans to get married. In fact, there are also those who like to live life by remaining single.

If you are a gamophobic and in a relationship, the most important thing is to tell your partner from the start about your situation and the life choices that make you happy. This is done in an effort to avoid ghosting and hurting your partner’s heart.

However, if you want to overcome your gamophobia and want to learn to make serious commitments in your relationship, there are several ways you might be able to help, including:

1. Self therapy

Self-therapy is a great way to identify possible reasons why commitment or marriage is such a great fear in your life. After that, think about what you really want and need in a relationship.

2. Couples therapy

If you and your partner want to make a relationship that is committed to marriage, but something is blocking and preventing you from taking a step towards commitment, couples therapy may be you can do it.

So that you and your partner can practice making commitments together, try the following:

  • Spend time on weekends together, for example out of town.
  • Get in the habit of holding hands in public or around familiar people.
  • Talk about things you would like to do together during the holidays.
  • Make a plan each will do activities with your partner in a week, 2 weeks, or a month beforehand, to challenge yourself to live the plan.
  • Try taking a walk while looking at an apartment or house, and think about what it would be like to share a house with your partner.
  • Consult a therapist

If you have trouble, you can ask for help from a psychologist or psychiatrist to deal with the phobia you are experiencing. A psychologist or psychiatrist can help explore the reasons why you are afraid to commit and find ways to overcome them. For example, by providing counseling, psychotherapy, or cognitive behavioral therapy.

Medication is usually not required in the treatment of specific phobias. However, if you experience panic attacks, anxiety, and depression, a psychiatrist may prescribe some antidepressant drugs.
