Guatemala President Tested Positive for Covid-19
Windowofworld.com – Guatemala President Alejandro Giammattei said that he was positive for the new Corona virus (Covid-19). Although he told a local radio station he felt well, in a televised address aimed at Guatemalan citizens Giammattei seemed a little out of breath.
“My symptoms are very mild. Until now my body is sore, yesterday was sicker than today, like a bad flu, “said the President.
“I don’t have a fever, I have a little cough,” he added.
“I’m busy working from home,” he said as quoted by AP, Saturday (19/9/2020).
Giammattei (64) has multiple sclerosis and uses a cane to walk.
The government press office said in a statement that Giammattei would isolate himself from all public activity, so that all communications would be carried out remotely.
The announcement came on the same day the country reopened its borders and international flights after a six-month closure due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The country’s Ministry of Health said that foreigners wishing to enter Guatemala had to present a negative PCR test taken up to 72 hours prior to entry.
But the test does not apply to Guatemalans returning to their country and children under 10 years of age. Everyone entering or leaving must wear a mask.
Guatemala closed its airports and borders with Mexico, Belize, Honduras and El Salvador on March 16. The country of 16 million has more than 83,600 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, and 3,036 deaths.
