The Nobel Assembly said two scientists from the United States (US) and one from the UK won the 2020 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for their work in identifying the Hepatitis C virus, which causes cirrhosis and liver cancer.
“Prior to their work, the discovery of the Hepatitis A and B viruses had been an important step forward,” the Nobel Assembly said in a statement, as reported by Reuters on Monday (5/10/2020).
“The discovery of the Hepatitis C virus reveals the causes of remaining chronic hepatitis cases and allows for blood tests and new drugs that have saved millions of lives,” he continued.
Apart from getting medals and prestigious awards in their respective fields, the Nobel Prize winners also received a cash prize of USD 1.1 million.
