Israeli missile hits civilian plastic warehouse in Syria, kills 1
Windowofworld.com – Explosions were heard in the coastal cities of Syria, Latakia and Tartus, as the country’s air defenses responded to Israeli missile attacks. This Israeli attack targeted areas further into the interior of Syria.
The Syrian news agency SANA said the targets of Israeli aggression were al-Haffah, a city in northeastern Latakia, and Masyaf, which lies midway between Tartus and Hama. The attack took place shortly after 3 a.m. local time on Wednesday (5/5/2021).
SANA reported that an Israeli missile hit a civilian warehouse where plastic was stored in rural Latakia, killing one civilian and injuring two others.
Al Arabiya news agency reported that a civilian was killed and six others injured after Syrian air defenses intercepted and destroyed a missile launched by Israel.
The Israeli military did not immediately comment on the latest attack.
Israel regularly carries out attacks against Syria. Most of the attacks were aimed at targets affiliated with Iran in what it said was an attempt to prevent its arch-foe from securing further footholds along its border.
Iran has allied with the government in Damascus against the Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) terrorist group and other militants, some affiliated with al-Qaeda. Iran has members of its own military as well as fighters from various countries fighting with the militias it supports stationed across Syria.
In January, Israel said it had hit about 50 targets in the neighboring country by 2020.
The most recent attack, on April 22, targeted around Damascus. A Syrian air defense missile fired in response finally exploded on the ground near the Dimona nuclear complex in southern Israel.
