MOVIE OVERVIEW THE LARGE BLIND
The author / director of this movie will only be noticed by the public. He broke and hit a liquor store. The film is the Blacksheep squadron of the film world. A list of nobodies. The most notable actress in this attempt has also appeared in the obscure reality television program, Joe Schmo. If you only gave this information about the movie, it’s a logical conclusion that the movie should only be broadcast on Mystery Science Theater 3000 or late at night when no one is awake or newer. Strange enough though, this movie works.
What most people do not know from writer / director, David James, is that in the true sense of the word he is a true runner. He is a coin of the ring game, although he can be seen, year in and year, hanging around World Series of Poker events like a remora hanging on a shark. This love of the game, combined with its history and knowledge, gives the film a realism that is rare in poker movies.
Unlike Rounders who follow a linear storyline, the Big Blind has more of a Pulp Fiction feel about it. There are several sites and story lines that center around Lake Elsinore Casino. James concludes these vignettes masterfully to create a wonderful film tapestry about the events in and around the poker world.
The game itself contains a wide range of personalities and characters. This fact is not lost in the movie. Instead of zeroing on a stereotype, David James decades creates diverse personalities. Actual art mimics the real life.
If your enjoyment of poker is not limited to the game itself, but also the atmosphere, you will enjoy the Big Blind. The eager realism that is represented in this movie makes you feel like the logged-out events can happen at your favorite casino at any time. However, if you are looking for strength, I suggest renting a quality movie like Gigli.
