Nobel Committee: Food Is the Best Vaccine Against Chaos
The Rome-based organization helps an estimated 97 million people in 88 countries each year. However, one in nine people around the world still does not have enough food to eat.
“The need for international solidarity and multilateral cooperation is more urgent than ever,” said Berit Reiss-Andersen, chairwoman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee.
He urged WFP to increase efforts to prevent the use of hunger as a weapon of war and conflict. According to him, the Covid-19 pandemic could double hunger in the world so that the role of WFP is increasingly important.
“Until the day we have medical vaccines, food is the best vaccine against chaos,” said the Nobel Committee.
“There is an estimate by the WFP that there will be 265 million hungry people in a year, so clearly this is also a call for the international community not to donate too little to WFP,” said the Nobel Committee.
WFP manages a logistics service that delivers medical cargoes to more than 120 countries amid the pandemic to help countries and health partners fight Covid-19.
The United Nations (UN) agency also provides transportation services to transport humanitarian and health workers where commercial flights do not exist.
“When we live through a global pandemic, the need for food and humanitarian assistance will intensify,” said Reiss-Andersen.
WFP Executive Director David Beasley, who was traveling in Nigeria, posted the video statement on social media. “This is because of the WFP family. They’re out there in the toughest, most complicated, place in the world, where there’s war, conflict, climate extremes, which doesn’t matter. They are out there and they deserve this award, ”he said.
“This is the first time I can’t speak. This is unbelievable. And wow! Wow! Wow! Wow! ” he said.
