Shakira’s combination of rock and latin sounds is a global smash
Shakira, whose full name is Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, is a Colombian Latin pop singer and songwriter. Shakiras’ love for music started at a very young age. At the age of eight she wrote and compiled music. Although she could not make her school choir because of her too strong, Shakira could excite her heart by taking part in a weekly television contest for children, Vivan Los Ninos (Long Live The Kids). By the age of thirteen, Shakira was a local well-known person who had a lucky chance with Sony Columbia’s Ciro Vargas CEO on a flight from Barranquilla to Bogota. Vargas agreed to provide Shakira with an audition and was impressed by her.
His confidence in her eventually led to a record agreement with the company. At the age of 13, Shakira released her debut album, Magia (Magic), in 1991 at Sony Colombia. The album, which lacked the recording and production cohesion, could not sell more than one thousand copies. Released in 1993, Shakiras’s second album, Peligro (Danger), did not fare much better. It was at this time, Shakira decided to take a break from the survey and to graduate from high school.
In 1995, Shakira returned to the music scene with the album Pies Descalzos (Bare Feet), which strengthened her commercial success by selling more than 5 million copies worldwide. When releasing a remix version of the album, The Remixes, Shakira meets Emilio Estefan, Jr., who worked as an executive producer on Shakira’s fourth studio album, Dnde Estn Los Ladrones. (Where are the thieves?).
The album, combined with rock and latin sounds, featured singles hits, including Ciega Sordomuda (Blind Dow-Mute), Moscas and La Casa (Flies In The House), No Creo (I Believe), Inevitable T ), Si Te Vas (if you leave), Octavo Da (Eighth Day) and the global success Ojos As (Eyes Like That). The cumulative effect of such hit singles allowed the album to sell more than 7 million copies worldwide. Shakira will release her first live album, Shakira MTV Unplugged, which consists of single players from Dnde Estn Los Ladrones? (Where are the thieves?).
In 2001, Shakira started working on a crossover album in English. Teamed with Gloria Estefan, Shakira wrote and recorded English versions of the singles of Dnde Estn Los Ladrones? and new songs were also added to create Shakiras’s first American album, Laundry Service. Although some critics claim that her understanding of the English language was not enough enough, it did not prevent Laundry Service from becoming a commercial success. Wassery Service will eventually sell more than 13 million CDs worldwide, thanks to such hits as when, where, under your clothes, Te Dejo Madrid (I’m leaving Madrid), Objection (Tango) and The One. Such hits helped to establish Shakira’s musical presence in mainstream America.
Shakiras next album, Fijacin Oral Vol. 1, released on June 6, 2005 in Europe and June 7, 2005 in North America, was also a commercial success. The album debuted at # 1 in Spain and # 4 on the American Billboard 200, which is still the salesman of the first week’s sales album. The albums lead only La Tortua, climb to # 1 in Spain and # 23 on the American Billboard Hot 100. On November 29, 2005, Shakira will release her second English album, Oral Fixation Vol. 2, which includes the hit single, Hips Dont Lie, a single that would climb on the American Billboard Hot 100 on # 1. The album was released on March 28, 2006. Shakira is currently working on the son of former president of Argentina, Fernando de la Rua.
