The Love Guru
Forget animated characters, Mike Myers is back in his first original role since Austin powers and he does not disappoint. The Love Guru is a thin veiled tribute to Deepak Chopra, focusing on the effort of a guru to break a curse, get a few reunited and a hockey team to the Stanley Cup. It’s not a small order, but you can expect hilarious hi-jinks to arise.
Mike Myers misses a step in this comedy that played around the star of Toronto Maple Leafs, Darren Roanoake, played perfectly by Romany Malco. Roanokes wife is lured by the star of the LA Kings, Jacques Grand (Justin Timberlake) and she to the Love Guru to restore home harmony to get Malco back on track.
With a role that includes Jessica Alba and Ben Kingsley, it’s hard to go wrong. Myers produced the original story together with Graham Gordy and compiled with Michael deLuca. It has been a difficult road for Myers since the success of Austin Powers, and while showing outstanding performances in animated movies, it indicates his return to play a person. There is still an audience waiting for breathing.
The starting point behind the Love Guru Movie is not necessarily new, and the Myers really makes it. His character, Pitka, is abandoned as a boy outside an ashram in India and is trained in the direction of the guru. When he comes to America, he finds fame as a self-help guru who caters for the stars.
Known for his unorthodox techniques, Pitka is hired by the owner of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Jane Bullard (Alba). For a fortnight, the team has been a victim of the Bullard curse, and it seems that it once again marred Malco and his alienated wife in the form of disharmony. Timberlake is perfect in his role as the golden son of the LA Kings who carried the woman away.
Given Myers’ love for Chopra and hockey, it’s definitely a project made in heaven for the 45-year-old star. Known for the blend of life and art, Myers fights his battle in this movie, after disappointing audiences in turn as the Cat and the Hat. He is definitely in his element in this zany comedy that contains some of today’s warmest rising stars. It’s a smart career for Myers and one of those audiences will undoubtedly embrace as long as he keeps himself in control.
The Love Guru is in the United States on 20 June. Expect a big role and cover as a Hollywood book about whether Myers can bring the audiences. Given the popularity of the Shrek movies and Myers in general, most movies have to forgive Myers for his few wrong spaces and thoroughly enjoy this fun and hilarious comedy.
