The majority of Arab citizens reject the agreement and recognition of Israel
Windowofworld.com – Most citizens in Arab countries do not support normalizing relations with Israel without solving the Palestinian problem. This is shown by the results of a survey that was recently published.
“About 88% of more than 28,000 respondents in 13 countries in the Middle East and North Africa oppose diplomatic recognition of Israel,” the findings of the annual Arab Opinion Index show as quoted from Anadolu, Thursday (14/10/2020).
According to data released last week only 6% supported official Israeli recognition and 6% refused to answer.
The survey, conducted by the Doha-based Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies, included direct interviews with 28,288 individual respondents.
Respondents who opposed diplomatic relations with Israel based their positions on reasons primarily related to Israel’s colonialist nature, racist and expansionist policies, and persistence in occupying Palestinian land.
The Arab Opinion Index, the largest public opinion survey conducted in the Arab world, was released amid a wave of normalization deals with Israel.
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is the first to take this controversial path. The UAE announced an agreement brokered by the United States (US) last August which was formalized in Washington on September 15.
The move was later followed by Bahrain, despite widespread criticism from Palestinians, who say the agreement is a betrayal of their cause.
The Palestinian Authority has said that any deal with Israel must be based on the 2002 Arab Peace Initiative and the “land for peace” principle, not a “peace for peace” position pushed by Israel.
