Trump Awarded a Prestigious Medal of Honor to the Emir of Kuwait
Windowofworld.com – President of the United States (US) Donald Trump awards the U.S. Legion of Merit, Supreme Commander, to the Emir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah. According to a statement issued by the White House, adding that this is the first time a medal of honor has been awarded since 1991.
The emir’s eldest son, Sheikh Nasser Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah, received the award on his father’s behalf at a private ceremony with Trump on Friday.
“(The Kuwaiti Emir) is a steadfast friend and partner of the United States who provided much-needed support to the United States during Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Immortal Freedom and the Defeat-ISIS campaign,” the White House praised as quoted by Reuters on Saturday (19 / 9/2020).
Operation Iraqi Freedom refers to the US invasion of Iraq in 2003 to topple former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein. Meanwhile Operation Enduring Freedom in 2001 was a US-led military operation that ousted the Taliban from power in Afghanistan; and the Defeat-ISIS campaign for the US-led coalition’s efforts to end the ISIS militant group’s territorial control in Syria and Iraq.
The White House described the award given to the emir of Kuwait as a prestigious and rare award that only a president can give, usually to a head of state or foreign government.
The 91-year-old Kuwaiti emir arrived in the US last July to complete medical treatment, the Kuwaiti state news agency said at the time, adding that he was in stable condition after undergoing a successful operation.
In July, the Kuwaiti cabinet tweeted that the emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah arrived at the Rochester airport in the United States, without naming the city. The main campus of the Mayo Clinic, among the top US medical centers, is in Rochester, Minnesota.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, two sources with knowledge of the matter said the emir was being treated at the Mayo Clinic. The clinic referred inquiries to the Kuwaiti government, which issued a statement that mostly echoed White House comments about the emir receiving the award.
On Monday, the Kuwaiti prime minister told the Kuwaiti cabinet about improving the health of emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah.
